On 18th October, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the Global Status Report on Physical Activity 2022. This is the first report summarising progress on implementation of the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030. The headline finding is that progress has been slow and uneven. While many countries have a policy on physical activity, in many cases these are not ‘operational’. We also see inequalities in the existence of policies and actions across world regions and by country income categories. The report also included the findings from a recent economic analysis, which estimated that without increased action there will be an estimated 500 million new cases of preventable chronic disease from physical inactivity by 2030, incurring treatment costs of just over US$ 300 billion or around US$ 27 billion annually.
